Las Palmas de Gran Canaria | Las Palmas city

Las Palmas is the largest city and the capital of Gran Canaria at the same time. It is situated in the north-eastern part of the island, in direct vicinity of Atlantic Ocean, between two charming bays and beautiful beaches there created: Playa de las Canteras
and Playa de las Alcaravaneras. The Las Palmas city was founded in 1478, with the name "Real de Las Palmas" when an invading Castilian army claimed the islands for the Crown. With a population of over 600,000, Las Palmas is the largest city in the Canary Islands and the ninth or tenth largest city in Spain. Together with Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it is the joint capital of the Canary Islands.

The International Airport of Gran Canaria is 20 kilometres from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and can be reached by taking the motorway Autopista GC-1, which allows you to make the journey in less than 20 minutes. You can also arrive in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by sea. The Puerto de la Luz and Las Palmas port is a base for cruise ships between the months of October and June.
The main beach of Las Palmas City, and the one where most tourists go, is la Playa de Las Canteras. Three kilometres of golden sand go hand in hand with three kilometres of pleasant walkway, where all types of services are available: hotels, restaurants, bars and terrace bars. At nightfall, the beach becomes an excellent place for practising all types of sport, or for a relaxing stroll.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Vegueta is the oldest district of Las Palmas, place where began the existance of the city, first called Real de Las Palmas. Nowadays there are numerous of museums, religious and historic buildings that came from the ancient times. Vegueta also houses museums such as Casa Colón (Christopher Columbus museum), where you can learn about the most interesting aspects of Columbus´ trips to America and his stopovers in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Before leaving Vegueta you must visit the Guiniguada theatre and take a walk through the old market that dates back to 1854.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has four large commercial centres: Las Arenas, La Ballena, 7 Palmas and El Muelle as well as the shopping areas of Triana and Mesa y López. The shops, leisure and service centres offer a wide range of products and prices. In the area around Santa Catalina Park there are small businesses specialising in sound and image equipment. When shopping in Las Palmas you will notice that the prices are very good compared to back home and there are a good deal of bargains to be had on all manner of goods. In whichever district you are in you will find road upon road of shops and stores for you to peruse and enjoy.

The whole Gran Canaria island enjoys a subtropical weather, thus Las Palmas has one of the best quality climates in the world.
Gando airport on Gran Canaria, is the 5th most used airport in Spain, some 10 million passengers pass through its doors every year. It is 18 kms from Las Palmas, about 20 minutes by car. There is a bus which connects the airport to Las Palmas which leaves every 30 min. Las Palmas city and the whole island has excellent hotels in order to cater millions of visitors every year.
There are lots of cultural events such as the Theatre and Dance Festival, the International Film Festival, the Opera Festival, various museums and exhibitions, theatre... Its leisure facilities are also very good. There are also lots of restaurants, bars, dicsos...
