The majority of visitors to the island come to soak up the sun in some of Europe's most famous stretches of sand, such as Maspalomas and Playa Del Ingles, and relax in one of the many popular holiday resorts, all of which can be found in the south of the island. Gran Canaria 1,560 square kilometres (538 square miles) is smaller than Tenerife but has the largest population, 740,000 inhabitants. The Island is roughly round in shape with the peak of Pozo de Las Nieves (1,949 metres above sea level), in the centre of the island.  Radiating from the peak, like spokes of a wheel are deep ravines roughly 26 kilometres in length that reach the coast. Gran Canaria is probably the most scenic of the Canary Islands.

Gran Canaria

A little northwest along the Gran Canaria coast, you will find the popular resort of Puerto Rico with its crescent shaped sandy beach and sports harbour. A more peaceful bay can be found west of Puerto Rico at Playa de los Amadores where ball games and radios are banned. Sunbeds are available for hire and there is a good selection of bars and restaurants behind the beach. A short way west is the fishing port of Puerto Mogan with its traffic tree village of local-style houses and narrow alleyways. This quiet resort has an excellent protected beach which is perfect if you have young children. In north of Gran Canaria there is the wonderful beach of Playa de las Canteras which is to the west of the island's capital - Las Palmas. The beach is 3km of golden sand, flanked by a promenade.

With beaches to suit all tastes, Gran Canaria is an oasis of sun-drenched, golden sand. Most beaches are found in the south of the Island, where the climate is warm and dry all year round. In the larger villa holiday resorts you’ll find soft, fine sand, fantastic water sports and beachside facilities. Las Palmas is without doubt Gran Canaria’s largest commercial centre. All the major retail chain and franchise stores can be found in this cosmopolitan city centre. Local markets sell fresh produce, linen, leather and handcrafted goods such as wicker baskets. For quality souvenirs made on Gran Canaria look out for FEDAC shops.

Gran Canaria enjoy year-round great weather. In fact the climate changes very little from summer to winter. Average temperatures during the winter months are a very pleasant 20C rising to around 30C in the summer. It's not uncommon for temperatures to reach the mid-to-high 30's, even pushing above 40C in summer thanks mainly to the hot summer winds blowing in from Sahara. Rain is relatively low and quite unevenly distributed on the island with the southern tourist hotspots being particularly rain-free. If it does rain it tends to be for short periods in the cooler months of January and February with July, August, and September normally rainless
